PFAS-free performance: PerfectaFILM® in paper-based food packaging

Food packaging producers are under pressure to remove fluorochemicals without compromising the oil-and-grease resistance consumers and food brands rely on. A leading European packaging converter, supplying a well-known fast-food chain, faced exactly this challenge in food wraps and takeaway containers. By using PerfectaFILM®, Avebe’s plant-based barrier starch, the converter was able to move to a PFAS-free solution while maintaining the functional barrier performance required for paper-based food packaging. Applied at 2.0 g/m² per side by film press, PerfectaFILM® with extender achieved grease resistance in full food contact compliant packaging, supporting the complete removal of fluorochemicals.

The solution also worked where it matters most: in existing production reality. PerfectaFILM® can be applied on fast paper coating lines, at high dry solids, helping to reduce porosity and create a continuous oil-and-grease barrier on the paper surface. For converters, this means a practical route to PFAS-free packaging with minimal process adjustments, competitive processing economics and no unwanted stickiness when used as broke. The result is paper-based packaging that supports food contact safety, biodegradability and compostability, without forcing manufacturers to choose between sustainability and performance.
